How does one go about shipping a puppy from NC to CT? Curious about fees, procedures, vaccinations, insurance etc.
Reason for my asking: I’m considering purchasing a pup and am considering having it flown to a vacinity closer to where I live. Any information breeders can provide, or those that have purchased a pup from a *reputable* breeder, please respond.
Really, if I wanted an opinion about adoption experiences, I would’ve asked that. Suffice to say, adopting the breed I seek is difficult, at best. I have been pursuing that for several months now, unsuccessfully. The question is about air travel for a pup. If anyone can offer input on THAT topic, I’d be grateful.
Further, I fail to see how air travel is ‘mean’. There really should be ages & education level posted on profiles.
Really, folks… if YOU DON’T KNOW THE ANSWER PLEASE SKIP OVER. Generalities, and repeating what I’ve already stated is NOT helping..
I’m looking for specifics here…
Also, if I wanted to ask the breeder with whom I hope to deal, I would have. I posed the question here to gain some insight without having to involve the breeder to that degree — yet.
JEN VT!! THANK YOU!!

that is so mean!!!
I suggest adopting a dog from petfinder.com. We adopted a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix from that website about two years ago, and it worked out well. He was shipped to CT (just like you!) from Tennessee. Basically, they are shipped up on a truck with a bunch of other dogs being adopted in the area. Our dog was not a puppy, but there were other families that had rescued puppies. It was rewarding being able to “save” a dog instead of just buying from a breeder, and he (our dog) is very loyal, and a great addition to our family. You might have to put in a little more time training your dog, but I think it is worth it.
If you need any more information, you can email me at Kimmie0990@yahoo.com
Most reputable breeders (and hopefully you are dealing with one) can provide you all the info you need regarding shipping.
Avoid breeders. Period. There are thousands of dogs available at shelters across the country and there are many beautiful pure bred dogs that are abandoned in shelters and rescued by breed specific rescue groups. Do an Internet search for the breed of your dog and use the word rescue in the search (e.g., “German Shepherd Rescue”). Your local no kill shelter can also help you find the right dog.
Animals are shipped on commercial carriers as freight. Most of the fees are similar from one airline to the next. Call your local airport with the weight of your dog and kennel and ask the shipping rates. American Airlines has a great resource online about the restrictions, etc. at http://www.aa.com.
One major restriction is air temperature at the point of departure and arrival. While the plane is heated and cooled, the cargo areas of the airports are not. The temperature for all breeds except brachocephalic dogs (pug noses) is 45-85 degrees. It’s 45-75 degrees for the pug noses. The airlines will not ship if, for example, it’s 20 degrees in Connecticut.
The breeder gets the health certificates, crate requirements, etc. You, as the new owner, will have to pay either in advance for the shipping or COD, depending on your breeder’s preference. Insurance is extra and you should discuss this with the breeder.
I have both purchased dogs and shipped my own puppies and have never had any problems.
Fees vary according to size of crate, length of flight, etc. It can range from $150 to $300.
I use Continental Pestsafe to ship my pups. They are wonderful and it’s fairly inexpensive. They do have air temp restrictions, though, so check that out before having it shipped. They have to have a vet sign off on a health form within 7 days of the filght and need age appropriate vaccines, including rabies if they are over 12 weeks of age. For a 15 lb pup and crate it was $199 plus tax to send pups from Hartford, CT to PR and PA, so it would be about the same from NC to CT. There is no insurance- all responsibility is on the shipper to ensure the pup is healthy enough to fly. They do not allow sedatives. NC to CT should be only a few hours including ground time so as long as you’re within the temp range it should be fine.
